Mindfulness

To put it succinctly, mindfulness is paying attention to the present moment with curiosity and non-judgement. Mindfulness is a tool that has scientifically been proven to improve quality-of-life and happiness. A growing body of research shows how mindfulness contributes to overall well-being by improving our immune system, increasing positive emotions, decreasing stress levels, and bringing a sense of peace.

With mindfulness, we begin to observe our thoughts. When we are stuck in undesirable thought patterns we often create more stress, both in the physical body and in the mind. However, by practicing mindfulness, we can stop ruminating about the past, stop worrying about the future, and be fully present in each moment. Often, we find our minds racing a million miles a minute, and it feels like we can’t turn it off. A mindfulness practice allows us to choose quality, intentional thoughts, reducing the feeling of stress, depression or anxiety. Mindfulness brings us out of “fight or flight” mode, and into “rest and digest,” allowing us to experience the wonderful world around us.

One way to tap into mindfulness is meditation. Meditation might sound intimidating, but there is a meditation practice for all! Meditation can be done anywhere, any time, for any length of time. It can be done in a group, or in solitude. It can be done standing, sitting, laying down, even while walking. Meditation may be guided, may focus on breathing, may include a mantra or may be part of your yoga practice. Meditation is simply the act of quietly observing your thoughts, slowing down, and giving your brain a rest. Resilience

Resiliency enables us to be happier, with healthier self-worth. Progressive Health’s resilience programs offer evidence-based training and education that enhances participants’ well-being and resilience to stress. The program is highly accessible and easy to put into practice teaching stress management tools that can be used daily, with no special equipment, and promotes mental health without the use of medication.
